Worked on this project as a part of coursework in the subject "Mechanical Behavior of Materials" taught by Prof. Dr. Sivaprasad Katakam, in the month of November 2019 at National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli.
The primary goal of this project was to increase the strength of AZ31 magnesium alloy by the addition of Rare earth alloy with a negligible increase in density.
I carried out the casting of AZ31-xCe alloys (where x=0 wt.%, 0.5 wt.%, and 1 wt.%) using stir casting technique.
The characterization of these samples was carried out using an optical microscope. The hardness values were measured using Rockwell's Hardness Tester.
The hardness value increased with the increase in the addition of Ce to AZ31. Highest hardness amongst the alloys was recorded in AZ31-1% Ce.
